According to ICANN's wiki, "Parked Domain Monetization is the business of purchasing domains and running advertising on a landing page to earn ad revenue from traffic. The traffic to these domains comes from a variety of sources: old bookmarks, people typing in the domain ie "direct navigation", residual traffic from the previous web site or search engine results."
Ad revenue to your "domain" is earned when a visitor clicks on advertisement links displayed on the page. Clearly, optimally targeted content and high visitor traffic increases the chances of click-throughs. The goal then is to enhance ad relevancy and to draw as much traffic as possible to the site.
Programs like Google's Ad Sense does the ad job with dynamically generated ad links that match your site's content. It's the traffic hurdle that fails the best laid plans. Until of course, the dawn of "Domain Monetization (DM)" services as a win-win solution for both providers and domain owners - you have a choice of how much you want to be involved. If you are not the hands-on type, don't worry - all you need is a parked domain. DM providers do the rest - create the content (ie build the website so you don't have to) and place the right ad links. Visitors click on the ads, advertisers pay, you collect your share of the revenue!
